The subject, direct object and indirect object of a German sentence?

I find it very difficult to identify the appropriate case (nom, acc, dat) because I don't know how to identify the subject, direct object and indirect object in a sentence. Can someone explain the concept to me, using examples, in simple terms? This is something that I have been trying to understand for a while, but can't quite seem to grasp :(
